History of Manhattan
Henry Hudson is the first explorer, who is credited for discovering Manhattan in September, 1609. It is also known that the Italian explorer, Giovanni da Verrazano discovered the New York harbor in 1524 and the Portuguese explorer, Estevan Gomez, also discovered the New York Harbor months later. It is hard to imagine they didn't see the island of Manhattan. The island wasn't settled by the Dutch until 1624. New York is named after the Duke of York, who later became the Catholic James II of England. Over time, Manhattan has become one of the most popular places in the world!
